Copyright and permissions

NJ PBS makes journalism, public television, and educational resources available to inform and serve the public. This page explains how to share our work, request permission to reuse material, and report a copyright concern.

Who owns the content

Original articles, photographs, video, audio, illustrations, graphics, and other creative material on this website may be protected by copyright. Rights may belong to NJ PBS, PBS, independent producers, photographers, authors, contributors, or other owners.

A program’s appearance on NJ PBS does not mean NJ PBS owns every element of that program or can authorize every proposed use. Music, archival footage, photographs, and other material may require permission from separate rights holders.

Check the credits, copyright notices, and license information attached to the material you want to use. A credit identifies a source or rights holder; it does not, by itself, grant permission.

Copyright protects original expression. This policy does not claim ownership of underlying facts, ideas, or material in the public domain.

Reading, watching, and personal use

You may read, watch, and listen to material through the features provided on this website, subject to any restrictions stated with that material.

For article text owned by NJ PBS, you may print or save a reasonable number of copies for your personal, noncommercial use. Keep the author’s name, source, copyright notice, and other credits intact. This permission does not extend to separately licensed photographs, video, audio, or other third-party material.

Use downloadable resources according to the permissions provided with them. Access to a stream, a program, or a PBS Passport benefit does not itself grant permission to download, redistribute, rebroadcast, or publicly screen the program.

Sharing links and embedded media

You are welcome to link to NJ PBS articles, programs, and other public pages.

Where an official sharing or embedding tool is available, use it according to the conditions provided by NJ PBS or the service operating the tool. Preserve the credits, source links, player controls, and other information supplied with it.

Sharing must not falsely suggest that NJ PBS endorses your organization, product, service, or views. An authorized embed does not grant permission to extract, alter, or rehost the underlying media file.

Fair use and other lawful uses

Nothing on this page limits fair use or other uses permitted by applicable law. You do not need our permission for a use that the law allows without permission.

Fair use depends on the circumstances, including the purpose of the use, the nature of the work, the amount used, and the effect on the work’s potential market. There is no automatic allowance based on a particular word count, clip length, or percentage.

Educational or nonprofit use may qualify for a legal exception, but that purpose alone does not make every use permissible. Providing credit also does not replace permission when permission is required.

If material carries a Creative Commons license or another express license, follow that license’s terms. Check whether photographs, music, or other components are excluded from it.

Republication, classroom use, and public screenings

Unless your use is authorized by law or an applicable license, obtain permission before republishing an article, reproducing a photograph, incorporating footage into another production, distributing copies, or screening a program publicly.

For classroom resources, review the rights information provided with the specific resource. For programs available through PBS or another distributor, consult that provider’s permissions guidance.

NJ PBS can authorize only the rights it owns or controls. Depending on the material, you may need permission from a producer, photographer, archive, distributor, or another rights holder. A permission granted for one use does not automatically cover a different format, audience, platform, or period.

Request permission

Email njpbs@montclair.edu with the subject Permission request and include:

  • The title and exact web address of the material.

  • The specific text, image, audio, or video you want to use.

  • Your name, organization, and contact information.

  • How and where the material will appear.

  • The intended audience, distribution, and duration of use.

  • Whether the use involves advertising, admission fees, sales, or other commercial activity.

  • Any proposed editing, translation, cropping, or other changes.

If permission is required, wait for written authorization from the appropriate rights holder before proceeding. Sending a request or receiving no response does not grant permission.

Names, logos, and endorsement

The NJ PBS, PBS, and program names, logos, and other identifying marks belong to their respective owners.

Do not use these marks in a way that falsely suggests sponsorship, affiliation, or endorsement. Uses permitted by trademark law remain unaffected. Other uses may require the owner’s written permission.

Report a copyright concern

If you believe material on njpbs.org infringes your copyright, email njpbs@montclair.edu with the subject Copyright concern.

Please provide:

  • Your name and contact information.

  • A description of the copyrighted work.

  • The exact web address of the material you are concerned about.

  • An explanation of your ownership or authority to act for the owner.

  • A description of the concern and any supporting information.

We may request additional information, refer the matter to the appropriate university office or rights holder, or remove or restrict access to material while the concern is reviewed.

If the material is hosted by PBS or another service, use that service’s copyright-reporting process. NJ PBS’s ability to change or remove material is limited to services it controls.

Repeated infringement

Where NJ PBS offers submission features, it may restrict or end a person’s ability to submit material in appropriate circumstances involving repeated copyright infringement, consistent with applicable law.
